What Is Black Clover?

Black Clover (ブラッククローバー) is a manga series written and illustrated by Yūki Tabata, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since February 2015. The anime adaptation was produced by Pierrot (the same studio behind Naruto and Bleach) and aired from October 2017 to March 2021, running for 170 episodes – one of the longer continuous anime runs of its era. A feature film, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, was released on Netflix in June 2023, and a sequel anime series has also been confirmed by the production team.

The series is set in a world where magic is the fundamental currency of power: almost every person is born with a specific type of magic – fire, water, wind, earth, lightning, spatial, healing – which they access through a grimoire that appears to them at age fifteen. The highest authority in the Clover Kingdom is the Wizard King (also called the Magic Emperor), and the story follows two orphan boys from the remote village of Hage who both dream of claiming that title.

Asta is the protagonist – a boy born in a world of magic who has absolutely no magical ability whatsoever. He is, as far as the world knows, completely magicless, which should make him an impossibility and a failure. Instead of magic, Asta compensates with relentless physical training – he is enormously strong, incredibly fast in terms of raw athleticism, and completely, almost comedically persistent. At fifteen, when grimoires appear to other children, Asta initially receives nothing – until a moment of crisis in which a five-leaf clover grimoire appears to him, an unprecedented black clover that contains anti-magic: the ability to completely negate and dispel any magic it contacts. The anti-magic manifests through three enormous swords that only Asta can wield. Later in the series, Asta develops a devil union with the demon Liebe, a bond that temporarily transforms his appearance with black-ink markings and dramatically amplifies his anti-magic power.

Yuno is Asta’s childhood friend, rival, and counterpart – where Asta has no magic, Yuno is a magic genius of exceptional natural talent. He receives a four-leaf clover grimoire at fifteen and uses wind magic at elite levels, later augmenting this with star magic and the revelation of his true heritage as a prince of the Spade Kingdom. His personality is the formal, cool, quietly confident counterpart to Asta’s explosive loudness, and the rivalry between the two – running since childhood, based on mutual respect and genuine affection wrapped in competitive intensity – is the emotional spine of the series.

Both join the Magic Knights – the elite military organizations of the Clover Kingdom – with Asta joining the infamous Black Bulls under Captain Yami Sukehiro, and Yuno joining the prestigious Golden Dawn under Captain William Vangeance.

Meet the Characters

Asta is the most represented character in this collection, which is fitting given that he is the protagonist with the most visually dramatic range across his various states. His base appearance is a short, muscular boy with white hair and green eyes, wearing the Black Bulls uniform – a black robe/jacket with the Black Bulls symbol (a bull skull with a four-leaf clover motif) in the center. His three anti-magic swords are enormous relative to his body size: the Demon-Slayer Sword is a broad, curved blade; the Demon-Dweller Sword is a longer, more elegant form; the Demon-Destroyer Sword is a more jagged design.

His demon form (Black Demon form, Devil Union with Liebe) involves black ink-like markings spreading across his body – starting as marks on his right arm and face and expanding in more complete forms – along with a single black wing and a more intense, charged-magic aura. The Asta Demon, Demon Asta, Asta Half Demon, and Asta Demon Power pages all depict versions of this transformation at different stages of intensity. These pages call for a fundamentally different coloring approach than the standard portrait pages: the black demon markings should be rendered in true black against his normally warm skin tone, and any energy effects around him work best in deep black or near-black with occasional intense highlights rather than the vivid color glow common in other action anime.

Yuno presents a completely different visual register from Asta. He is taller, with dark hair in a distinctive swept style, and wears the Golden Dawn uniform – a white robe with gold trim and the Golden Dawn’s distinctive tree-and-star emblem. His magic is primarily wind-based, and in action pages, the flowing, dynamic quality of wind magic lends itself to sweeping diagonal energy marks rather than the concentrated, heavy weight of Asta’s anti-magic pages. His star magic, developed later in the series, adds a golden, glowing quality to his power effects.

Yami Sukehiro is the captain of the Black Bulls – a large, heavily muscular man with dark, spiky hair and a perpetual five o’clock shadow, who wears the same Black Bulls uniform but with an open, more casual cut. He uses dark magic and wields a katana. His coloring should lean into the contrast between his dark magic aura and the rest of the composition – like Asta’s anti-magic, dark magic in Black Clover is black rather than vivid, and pages featuring Yami work best when his magic is rendered in true deep black with extreme contrast.

Noelle Silva is a member of the Black Bulls from the royal Silva family. She has silver-white hair and uses water magic, which manifests as swirling, flowing water constructs, including her signature Valkyrie Dress battle form. Her coloring should contrast with the silver of her hair against the blue-and-white of water magic effects. Her base uniform is the Black Bulls black, but her battle armor takes on a more form-fitting silver-and-blue appearance.

Nozel Silva is Noelle’s older brother and captain of the Silver Eagles squad. He also has silver hair (longer and more elaborate than Noelle’s) and uses mercury magic – similar to water but with a specifically metallic, liquid-silver quality. His attire is silver and white, in keeping with his squad’s aesthetic, and more formal and rigid in posture than almost any other character in the collection.

Mimosa Vermillion is a member of the Golden Dawn from the royal Vermillion family. She has long, golden-blonde hair and uses plant and healing magic – her constructs are flower and vine-based, with a warm green and gold palette that makes her pages among the most botanically colorful in the collection.

Mereoleona Vermillion is Mimosa’s aunt and an exceptionally powerful magic knight who uses fire magic at elite levels. She has red-orange hair and a fierce, aggressive demeanor. Her coloring palette is dominated by the warm red-orange of fire magic, and her hair, against the dark background of intense magical combat.

Nero is a small black anti-bird – a bird companion who follows Asta – who is later revealed to be Secre Swallowtail, a human transformed by sealing magic. In her bird form, she is pure black with small expressive eyes. The Nero page is one of the simpler pages in the collection and one of the most charming for this reason.

Zora Ideare is a rough-mannered Black Bulls member who uses trap magic – setting magical traps that reflect or redirect opponents’ magic back at them. He has a distinctive scar and wears a wide-brimmed hat over the Black Bulls uniform.

Zenon Zogratis is a member of the Dark Triad from the Spade Kingdom, possessing immense bone-based spatial magic and devil power. His pages depict a villainous character with a cold, severe visual design contrasting with the more open expressions of the Black Bulls heroes.

What’s Inside the Black Clover Coloring Collection

The Asta standard portrait and action pages – Asta, Asta Black Clover, Black Clover – Asta, Asta in Black Clover, Asta From Black Clover, Happy Asta, Asta Is Smiling, Asta Smiling, Cool Asta, Amazing Asta, Angry Asta, Printable Asta Black Clover, Asta Power, Asta Fighting, Asta Attack, Asta with Swords – cover Asta’s full range of non-transformed appearances, from cheerful portrait to intense battle. The sword pages in particular are compositionally strong because the scale of the anti-magic swords relative to Asta’s body creates natural drama.

The Asta demon and transformation pages – Demon Asta, Asta Demon, Asta Half Demon, Asta Demon Power, Asta Demon Black Clover – show varying degrees of his devil union transformation, each requiring careful attention to the black ink-marking pattern that spreads across his body.

The Yuno pages – Yuno, Yuno Standing, Yuno Fight, Yuno’s Magic Power, Yuno From Black Clover, Yuno In Black Clover, Yuno Black Clover, Cool Yuno, Cute Yuno, Handsome Yuno, Amazing Yuno, Awesome Yuno, Smiling Yuno, Little Yuno – form the collection’s second-largest cluster, covering Yuno’s calm, composed range across portrait and battle compositions. Little Yuno shows the character as a young child, providing a visual contrast with the older pages.

The chibi pages – Chibi Asta, Chibi Yuno, Yuno Chibi Face – offer the simplified, rounded-proportion chibi style as an alternative to the action-manga realism of most other pages.

The duo and group pages – Asta and Yuno Black Clover, Asta and Noel family, Black Clover – show the main characters together, the most important relational compositions in the collection.

The supporting character pages – Yami Sukehiro, Noelle Silva, Nozel Silva, Nozel Silva in Black Clover, Nozel Silva From Black Clover, Mimosa Vermillion, Mereoleona Vermillion, Nero, Zora Ideare, Zeno Zogratis – extend the collection beyond the two leads into the broader cast.

Coloring Tips for Black Clover Pages

Asta’s base palette is built around one key contrast: his white hair against the deep black of his Black Bulls uniform. Both elements need to be rendered with confidence – the white hair should stay genuinely bright (not grayed down), and the black uniform should be a true, deep black rather than a dark gray. His skin tone is warm – a standard warm tan that reads as energetic and alive. His green eyes are one of the few vivid color notes in his standard design; they should be a clear, mid-range green, noticeably brighter than the dark uniform.

For Asta’s demon transformation pages, the black markings are the defining element. They are not tattoos or paint – they are anti-magic energy manifesting visually across his body in specific branching patterns that spread from his right arm and face. Rendering them in true black as sharp marks against his warm skin tone is more effective than using a softer dark gray, because the harshness of the contrast reflects the nature of the anti-magic power. Any energy effects in these pages – dark aura, anti-magic swirls – work best when rendered in the same deep black with extremely bright white highlights at the most intense points, rather than in colored glow effects. Black Clover’s anti-magic is specifically defined as the absence of magic, and its visual treatment in the manga reflects this: it is black against everything, not colored.

Yuno’s palette contrasts directly with Asta’s. Where Asta is warm-skinned, black-uniformed, white-haired, and explosive in energy, Yuno is cool-toned, white-uniformed with gold trim, dark-haired, and controlled in composition. His dark hair should be a genuine near-black with cool blue undertones – a specific kind of dark that reads as refined rather than heavy. His Golden Dawn uniform is clean white with gold accents – getting the gold right (warm, rich, not too yellow, not too orange) makes his uniform immediately read as prestigious. His wind magic effects, if shown, should be rendered in transparent, sweeping lines of pale blue-white rather than opaque color.

For Noelle’s pages, the silver-white hair should match the silvery quality of water magic – both the hair and the magic effects belong in a cool, bright silver-white-blue register. Her water magic constructs are fluid and rounded in shape rather than angular, and work best when rendered with a gradient from deeper blue in the center of each water form to nearly white at the edges.

For Yami’s pages, his dark magic creates an opportunity similar to Asta’s anti-magic: deep, absolute black energy rendered with high contrast against everything around it, with white highlights in the most concentrated areas. His katana should be rendered in steel-gray, and his large physical presence grounds any page he appears on.

For Mimosa’s pages, her plant magic and natural warmth invite the most vivid botanical colors in the collection: rich greens for vine constructs, flower petals in pink and yellow, and her golden hair in full warm gold. She is the most colorful character in the collection in both design and magical expression.

For the chibi pages, apply each character’s canonical colors (Asta: white hair, black uniform, green eyes; Yuno: dark hair, white/gold uniform) in the flat, even style appropriate to chibi illustration. The exaggerated proportions of chibi style make the visual contrast between Asta and Yuno – white-haired vs. dark-haired, black uniform vs. white uniform – particularly crisp and readable at a smaller scale.

5 Activities to Do With Your Black Clover Pages

Color the rival pair study. Print an Asta portrait page and a Yuno portrait page and color both with rigorous attention to their canonical contrast: Asta in warm skin, white hair, black uniform, green eyes; Yuno in cool-toned skin, dark hair, white/gold uniform. Place them side by side when finished. The visual relationship between the two finished pages – the direct palette inversion of their uniforms, the hair color contrast – captures the series’ central dynamic of two characters who are defined as much by how they differ as by how they are connected. This is one of those pair coloring exercises where getting both characters canonically right produces a result that reads as distinctly Black Clover even without labels.

Trace Asta’s transformation arc. Print a standard Asta portrait page, an Asta Half Demon page, and an Asta Demon or Demon Asta page and color all three as a progression – the same skin tone, the same white hair, the same black uniform across all three, with the black anti-magic markings growing progressively more extensive from page one (minimal or absent) through page two (arm and partial face) to page three (full upper body). This transformation arc coloring exercise is one of the most character-specific activities in any anime collection on the site: it traces a character’s development through the visual language of color and marking pattern rather than text description.

Color the Magic Knights squad portraits. Print one page per squad represented in the collection – Asta’s Black Bulls (any Asta page in uniform), Yuno’s Golden Dawn (any Yuno page in uniform), and the Silver Eagles (any Nozel Silva page). Color each character in their squad’s canonical uniform palette: Black Bulls in deep black, Golden Dawn in white and gold, Silver Eagles in silver and white. Arrange them as a squad reference display with each squad’s name written below. This exercise connects the individual characters to their institutional affiliations in a way that makes the social structure of the series visually legible.

Design a five-leaf clover grimoire cover. The five-leaf clover black grimoire is the most visually distinctive object in the series – a worn book with a black cover, five black clover leaves arranged symmetrically on the front, and a visual quality of age and power. After coloring an Asta page, use a separate blank sheet of paper to design and color your own grimoire cover: start with the same five-leaf clover configuration but add your own decorative border, your own color scheme (it does not need to be black – what color would your grimoire be?), and your own magical motif in the center. This creative extension connects to the world-building logic of the series, where grimoire design reflects personality and power.

Create a Black Bulls vs. Golden Dawn display. Print the Asta and Yuno Black Clover pair page and several individual pages of Black Bulls members (Asta, Noelle, Yami, Zora, Nero) and Golden Dawn members (Yuno, Mimosa). Color all the Black Bulls pages in their deep-black uniform palette with warm, energetic coloring; color all the Golden Dawn pages in white-and-gold with cooler, more precise coloring. Arrange them as two facing groups – Black Bulls on the left, Golden Dawn on the right – with the Asta and Yuno pair page in the center between them. This arrangement captures the formal squad rivalry that structures much of the series’ competitive energy.
